Designing Your Own Media Room or Home Theater

Media Room / Home Theater

The same process applies for the Home Theater as for the Family Room System, with the Home Theater adding; room layout considerations, black-out material, projector, screen, curtain, furniture, etc.

1) Decide what your budget will be for all of the components (Projector/Screen or HDTV, Blu-ray player, Surround Sound, etc…)

2) Determine what components you already have.

3) Prioritize features/functions (if your initial selections exceed your budget, you can use priority list to help you get back to budget)

4) With all components “initially” identified, but NOT yet purchased, obtain complete connections list for each (photos, drawings, or simple list)  examples…

5) Using the connections information for each component, construct simple wiring diagram, like this example (click to enlarge):

6) If missing some connectors to complete all connections, reconsider component selection(s). In some cases it will save you headaches and money, by moving to slightly more expensive component. For example if you require 3 HDMI inputs and the surround receiver you initially chose only had 2 HDMI inputs, move to slightly more expensive receiver that gives you the required number of inputs and keeps you from buying a pricey HDMI selector/switch.

7) Place all the components in the desired location and connect per your wiring diagram.
